SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS: ECOLOGIC AND ECONOMIC CONTRADICTIONS AND CHALLENGES
Abstract
The adoption of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as priorities for further implementation at the global level requires the research and resolution of several issues, including the contradictions related to the implementation of the sustainable development goals. The assessment of progress in goals achieving is key one. It’s very important to consider the current parameters of a social and economic development of countries that formulate strategies corresponding with the existing economic model. The article reveals the contradictory nature of sustainable development goals, emphasises the contradictions that are currently being studied in academic literature. Among the number of contradictions, we focus on the issue of measurement arguing that the current system of statistics information is not representative for assessment in SDGs progress. Changes in the system of measurement will allow to overcome many existing contradictions and create not only information of a new quality, but also serve as drivers for the of Sustainable Development Goals achievement. This article offers the results of a study on the relations between the human development index and the of Sustainable Development Goals for the Eastern Partnership Countries plus Russia. We state the improvement of the quality of life of people (both today and in the future) to be an integrative objective and motivation for the implementation of SDGs. That’s why we chose Human Development Index as an indicator for assessing progress. Based on a correlation- regression analysis, we found a strong correlation between the human development index and the sixteen goals of sustainable development. Goal 7 (affordable and clean energy), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), interpreted as the basic preconditions for building an effective economic model, are found to be extremely important for the countries of the Eastern Partnership and Russia, because of a significant impact on HDI. The results can be used as an informational basis for assessing progress in achieving sustainable development goals.
